Taylor & Francis Ltd Food Provisions For Ancient Rome : A Supply Chain Approach Taylor & Francis Ltd Food Provisions For Ancient Rome : A Supply Chain Approach 36.79 GBP This book defines the processes used for delivering a range of food items to the city of Rome and its hinterland from the first century AD using modern supply chain modelling techniques. The subject matter delves into the wider supply of goods, such as wood and building products, to add further perspective to the breadth of the system managed by the Roman administration to ensure supply and political stability. It assesses the impact of strategic changes such as the introduction of water-powered milling technology and restructuring of the annona in this period, as well as administrative reforms.Evidence from ancient sources, both literary and epigraphic, along with relevant archaeological comparative evidence is used to develop a detailed supply model, including the mapping of warehouse management systems; port and river traffic co-ordination; quality control mechanisms and administrative structures.Unlike other contemporary studies, this model takes into consideration supply chain losses to correct the erroneous assumption that supply is equal to consumption.A product flow map from the source of supply to the consumer details the labour, equipment and infrastructure required at each stage, painting a graphic picture of just what an achievement it was for the administration to have maintained such a complex system over this long time period. Food Provisions for Ancient Rome provides an in depth exploration of this topic that will be of interest to anyone working on the city of Rome under the empire, as well as those interested in imperial administration and logistics.

The book is of interest to advanced students, researchers and professionals in food studies, sociology, geography, planning, politics and environmental studies.
Taylor & Francis Ltd The Art And Science Of Demand And Supply Chain Planning In Today'S Complex Global Economy Taylor & Francis Ltd The Art And Science Of Demand And Supply Chain Planning In Today'S Complex Global Economy 32.19 GBP The demand and supply chain planning process for manufacturers, distributors, and retailers has evolved over the years. It has gone from a disjointed, unconnected, slow, inaccurate, fairly manual set of processes to an integrated, timely process enabled by the use and coordination of highly trained people, lean, agile processes, and cutting-edge technology. To make this set of processes work effectively, one has to fully understand and appreciate that there is an "art and science" aspect to the process which can take years of education and experience to fully understand.Essentially, this book will offer the reader a chance to fully understand the interconnected set of processes in a "best-practice" application.Furthermore, examples and cases will be used to illustrate its practical application in today’s complex global supply chain. In addition, readers will understand and be able to apply and articulate the concepts, tools, and techniques used in the efficient supply of goods and services in today’s changing global economy. It will help them to learn how businesses, through their supply chain, work both internally and with their trading partners – both upstream and downstream – to build strong relationships and integrate demand and supply planning activities across the supply chain to deliver customer value efficiently and effectively. They will learn about the tools and technologies enabling integration, and the critical drivers and key metrics of supply chain performance.
Taylor & Francis Ltd Strategic Corporate Crisis Management : Building An Unconquerable Organization Taylor & Francis Ltd Strategic Corporate Crisis Management : Building An Unconquerable Organization 30.35 GBP Presenting an alternative to traditional models of centralized crisis management, this book makes the case for decentralizing crisis response and building resilience where it matters most, and provides an accessible, pragmatic approach for doing so.Focusing squarely on crisis management, the book challenges the notion that corporate crisis teams can be expected to swoop in and “save the day”: the role of the crisis team should be to advance a culture of readiness across an organization, and to foster leadership and crisis competency where it’s needed, when it’s needed.Crisis management expert Brendan Monahan draws from current management and leadership thinking that challenges hierarchies, finds incredible potential in the power of an organization’s people, and aligns with many of today’s highest-performing organizations that have already adopted this approach. This may run counter to current crisis management texts prescribing highly disciplined planning and command structures, but following this book’s alternative approach will unlock tremendous potential, deepen resilience, and improve outcomes in crisis response.Professionals in crisis management, business continuity, emergency management, risk management, and others with crisis management accountability will value this practical book for “corporate crisis first responders” to use when they encounter the extraordinary.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Natural And Engineered Solutions For Drinking Water Supplies : Lessons From The Northeastern United States And Directions For Global Watershed Management Taylor & Francis Ltd Natural And Engineered Solutions For Drinking Water Supplies : Lessons From The Northeastern United States And Directions For Global Watershed Management 58.87 GBP Illuminating opportunities to develop a more integrated approach to municipal water system design, Natural and Engineered Solutions for Drinking Water Supplies: Lessons from the Northeastern United States and Directions for Global Watershed Management explores critical factors in the decision-making processes for municipal water system delivery. The book offers vital insights to help inform management decisions on drinking water supply issues in other global regions in our increasingly energy- and carbon-constrained world. The study evaluates how six cities in the northeastern United States have made environmental, economic, and social decisions and adopted programs to protect and manage upland forests to produce clean drinking water throughout their long histories.New York, New York; Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts; New Haven and Bridgeport, Connecticut; and Portland, Maine have each managed city watersheds under different state regulations, planning and development incentives, biophysical constraints, social histories, and ownerships. Some of the overarching questions the book addresses relate to how managers should optimize the investments in their drinking water systems. What is the balance between the use of concrete/steel treatment plants (gray infrastructure) and forested/grassland/wetland areas (green infrastructure) to protect surface water quality? The case studies compare how engineered and/or natural systems are employed to protect water quality. The conclusions drawn establish that it makes environmental, economic, and social sense to protect and manage upland forests to produce water as a downstream service.Such stewardship is far more preferable than developing land and using engineering, technology, and artificial filtration as a solution to maintaining clean drinking water.Lessons learned from this insightful study provide effective recommendations for managers and policymakers that reflect the scientific realities of how forests and engineering can be best integrated into effective watershed management programs and under what circumstances.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Supply Chains In Reverse Logistics : The Process Approach For Sustainability And Environmental Protection Taylor & Francis Ltd Supply Chains In Reverse Logistics : The Process Approach For Sustainability And Environmental Protection 47.83 GBP Currently, it is obvious that new types of production (Industry 4.0) are accompanying new ways of distribution, which advance logistics, physical distribution science, and even supply chain management. The changing environment for carrying out logistics activities is also important for the development of the supply chain.Care for ecology, the recent pandemic, and the situation in Ukraine are other reasons to adapt logistics to the needs of an individual customer/recipient.It would be impossible without developing an appropriate strategy and applying appropriate tools for managing supply chains in the national and international dimensions. This book specifically addresses these issues. When analyzing the needs and structure of modern supply chains, in the context of their safety and risk reduction, it is impossible to ignore the problem of digitization, which allows for logistic analysis of the company, determining optimal routes, designing logistic systems, optimizing storage processes and costs, and predicting possible threats (crisis situations) and their effects (losses).IT support, automatic data exchange, e-logistics, telematics, traceability, and chatbots between various departments of the company along the upper and lower parts of the supply chain improve the flow of material and accompanying information through automation, robotization, proactivity, and document digitization. These new trends make it possible to define logistics as modern logistics using new achievements of science and technology. Modern logistics must also consider ecological aspects in line with assumptions about protecting the environment and improving our climate.Efficiently organized reverse logistics is not without significance for ecology. It is supported by renewable energy, electric vehicles, proper education in the field of a closed economy, cleaner production, waste minimization, the use of passive infrastructure, and proper waste management that allows us to positively influence environmental protection and human health. To meet the needs of creating modern supply chains, the authors developed this powerful book in which they analyze and present current and future solutions that influence the development of these issues in modern reverse logistics.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Supply Chain In The Pharmaceutical Industry : Strategic Influences And Supply Chain Responses Taylor & Francis Ltd Supply Chain In The Pharmaceutical Industry : Strategic Influences And Supply Chain Responses 35.87 GBP The pharmaceutical and healthcare industry is hugely complex because it involves so many markets, products, processes and intermediaries. It is also heavily regulated, global, and used by everyone at some stage in their life.No wonder the supply chain for delivery of healthcare services is often fragmented and understood only in discrete sections.Changes in one area impact upon the others, and environmental factors such as pricing, regulatory change or actions by competitors impact the whole supply chain in ways that are not easily understood or managed.Accelerating technology, the commoditization of healthcare, increasing demands from ageing populations all influence the approach that suppliers of pharmaceutical products and services worldwide need to take if they are to design and manage an effective supply chain that will be capable of: exploiting their intellectual property in a sustainable way; providing safe and continuous provision of drugs or devices; and sustaining with resilience, yet still be flexible and cost efficient.Supply Chain in the Pharmaceutical Industry offers the basis for organizations to develop their own blueprint for managing the opportunities and threats to the pharmaceutical supply chain.Using examples from companies and markets across the world Rob Whewell offers a very vivid picture of the developing trends for pharmaceutical companies; the customers and markets they serve and points to some of the elements that underpin sustainable pharmaceutical strategies. The current global banking and financial crisis illustrates the important role played by regulation. The healthcare industry is similar in scope, and complexity, yet the implications of error are worse - life threatening. This review of key industry parameters will provide senior executives in the industry and policy makers in healthcare with a broad perspective of the issues and illustrates an understanding of the task at hand.
Taylor & Francis Ltd Supply Chain Analytics : Using Data To Optimise Supply Chain Processes Taylor & Francis Ltd Supply Chain Analytics : Using Data To Optimise Supply Chain Processes 40.47 GBP Supply Chain Analytics, second edition, introduces the reader to data analytics and demonstrates the value of its effective use in the improvement of supply chain (SC) process performance.By describing four key SC processes and illustrating – through worked examples – how the descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytic methods can be applied to enhance those processes, this book presents a more comprehensive learning experience for the reader than has been offered previously. Key topics and issues are addressed, including the capriciousness of modern SC operating environments; the imperative of SC sustainability; the need for heightened SC risk management; the building of SC resilience; the pursuit of SC optimisation; and the use of big data, data mining, cloud computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and importantly the social issues confronting SC analysts in carrying out their work. The author identifies four core SC processes – strategy, design, execution, and people – to which the analytic techniques explained can be applied to ensure continuous performance improvement and the growth of competitive advantage. Pedagogy to aid learning is incorporated throughout, including an opening section for each chapter explaining the intended learning outcomes; worked examples illustrating how each analytic technique works, how it is applied, and what to be careful of; tables, diagrams, and equations to help ‘visualise’ the concepts and methods covered; end-of-chapter case studies; review questions; and assignment tasks. Providing both management expertise and technical skills, which are essential to decision-makers in the SC, this textbook is an essential reading for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of SC analytics, SC leaders, and SC operations management professionals. Its practice-based and applied approach also makes it valuable for teaching academics, organisational trainers and coaches, operating SC practitioners, and those pursuing professional qualifications. Online resources include chapter-by-chapter PowerPoint slides, tutorial exercises, written assignments, worked examples using Excel, and a test bank of exam questions.
Taylor & Francis Ltd The Lean, , Digital Supply Chain : How To Enable A Lean And Agile Global Supply Chain With The Help Of Technology Taylor & Francis Ltd The Lean, , Digital Supply Chain : How To Enable A Lean And Agile Global Supply Chain With The Help Of Technology 39.55 GBP Technology plays a key role in enabling lean and agile supply chain operations. For example, connecting to suppliers in real-time facilitates re-supplying parts and materials for a just-in-time production environment. But choosing the wrong technology can create waste in terms of the time, effort, and money spent evaluating, selecting, implementing, and using it. Furthermore, lean has been traditionally thought of as a "pen and pencil" technique as they were mostly confined to a single facility. As a consequence, while there are many books written on lean manufacturing, lean office, and, to a lesser degree, lean global supply chain, most if not all barely discuss the role and impact of technology in process improvement, and there aren’t many books that combine the topics of a lean and agile supply chain and technology (smart and otherwise) in this way. This book makes the case that technology is a key enabler of a lean supply chain and is unique in that it links lean and agile thinking with available and affordable technologies to get the most out of improved processes. Essentially, this book details various supply chain and logistics management areas where lean and agile thinking in combination with existing and emerging technologies such as the Internet, e-commerce, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, Robotics, IoT, AI, and Data Analytics can take an organization to the next level through increased speed, accuracy, integration, and collaboration among all parties in the supply chain.
Taylor & Francis Ltd Omni-Channel Retail And The Supply Chain : Working Together For A Competitive Advantage Taylor & Francis Ltd Omni-Channel Retail And The Supply Chain : Working Together For A Competitive Advantage 30.35 GBP Omni-Channel Retail and the Supply ChainThe days of going to the local department store to buy a television, view the options available, and make a purchase now seem "quaint." The emergence of the internet, smartphones, social media, and other technologies has opened a world of new options for consumers (and businesses) to review, research, and buy online with an ever-increasing array of delivery options. The emergence of e-commerce has resulted in what is commonly known today as "omni-channel" marketing, in which customers engage with companies in a variety of ways, including in a physical store or online via websites and mobile apps. This process puts the supply chain "front and center," as consumers are increasingly demanding and browsing, buying, and returning goods through various channels, not just the traditional "brick and mortar" way.To accomplish this with high levels of service while remaining profitable requires real-time visibility of inventory across the supply chain and a single view of consumers as they continuously move from one channel to another. While this is a boon to consumers, it has made the already complex global supply chain even more challenging to manage. On top of that, the 2020 Covid19 pandemic has accelerated this omni-channel retail trend, as consumers need even more ways to order and additional options for last-mile delivery, such as curbside pickup.Covid19 has exposed a lack of flexibility and readiness, resulting in shortages of everything from toilet paper and meats to personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators. It has been a real-life example of the "bullwhip effect," where variability at the consumer end of the supply chain results in increased variability as one goes upstream towards distributors, manufacturers, and suppliers. This results in shortages, misallocations, and increased costs. No longer can a manufacturer, distributor, or retailer of consumer products just "fill the pipeline" and wait for orders to come in.Now, they must anticipate various purchases and delivery items, while at the same time minimizing costs. To do this is no easy task, requiring a Lean, agile, and responsive supply chain. Until now, there was no existing "playbook" for organizations to navigate their way through this new world. This book describes the impact of omni-channel marketing on the supply chain and logistics functions, and is intended to help management meet the needs of not only today’s ever-changing world but to anticipate what may be required in the future to achieve superior customer service, profitability, and a competitive advantage.
