Taylor & Francis Ltd Small State Referendums : Lessons From Zealand
50.59 GBP
This book explores the unusual and unique experience of direct democracy in the small state of New Zealand, where referendums have been a persistent feature of the political landscape for over a century.Referendums have been the site of renewed interest from scholars, seeking to respond to what they term the "democratic deficit" in otherwise stable and functional Western democracies. They have also been at the heart of many divisive and important political and social moments in recent history, from the UK’s Brexit referendum in 2016 to the disputed legitimacy of the 2022 referendums in Russian-occupied Ukraine. This book fills an important gap in the literature through an extended study of the law and practice of referendums in the small Commonwealth state of New Zealand. It also expands the field of small state democracy studies by applying the insights of this field to the direct democracy experience of a small state. With the inclusion of comprehensive tables of referendums and legislative materials, this book will be of interest to scholars of direct democracy and small states, politicians, legislators and policy makers, and all those with a desire to do democracy better.
Allen & Unwin Aotearoa New Zealand The Girl From Revolution Road

Based on Ghazaleh Golbakhsh's experience as an Iranian immigrant growing up in New Zealand, these essays range from a childhood in war-torn Iran, including the trauma of a night spent in prison as a six-year-old, to learning English so she could make friends, to dating in the days of Corona. This is about growing up as a young woman torn between her immigrant roots and her desire to be like everyone else. The humour is sometimes offset with the more sombre reminder of the racism that has always existed in this country, from misguided quips to more serious stories of harassment. The impact of recent world events shows that, more than ever, marginalised voices are needed in our cultural discourse.

More than a decade on from their conception, this book reflects on the consequences of income management policies in Australia and New Zealand.Drawing on a three-year study, it explores the lived experience of those for whom core welfare benefits and services are dependent on government conceptions of ‘responsible’ behaviour. It analyses whether officially claimed positive intentions and benefits of the schemes are outweighed by negative impacts that deepen the poverty and stigma of marginalised and disadvantaged groups. This novel study considers the future of this form of welfare conditionality and addresses wider questions of fairness and social justice.

Two Rivers Clos Des Pierres Chardonnay 2022
17.81 GBP
Drink it now or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant, but best to open it half an hour before service. Located in Blenheim, in New Zealand's Marlborough wine region, Two Rivers Winery was founded by David Clouston, a local winemaker who returned home after years of experience and harvests abroad. Today, the winery, named after the region's most important rivers, the Wairau and Awatere, produces excellent wines based on international varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. Clos des Pierres is a 100% Chardonnay made from grapes from The Spring Vineyard, a vineyard over 25 years old, characterized by stony soil (hence the name "Pierres," meaning stones in French). After manual harvesting and gentle whole-cluster pressing, fermentation occurs spontaneously. The finished wine then ages in a mix of new and used barrels of various sizes for 8 months. In the glass, the wine displays a bright, intense lemon yellow color. Its aromatic profile is broad and fragrant, with notes of ripe citrus, nectarines, and lemon curd, followed by toasty and almond hints on a background of salty notes reminiscent of evening sea breezes. On the palate, it is juicy, concentrated, and well-structured. It has a distinctive minerality and a long, elegant finish. Try it with four-cheese pizza, pork tenderloin, or roast chicken.
